The United Nations Association of Africa (UNAA), has expressed its commitment to achieving the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as encapsulated in Agenda 2030.
The President General of the group, Ambassador Sylvester Okafor, who stated this, said UNAA is crucial in sensitising Africans about the importance of the SDGs.
Okafor, who noted that the SDGs represent a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030, said his group would mobilise stakeholders to take necessary action towards their actualisation.
He listed initiatives UNAA, under his leadership, will undertake, in pursuit of the realisation of the SDGs to include sensitisation campaigns across Africa, collaborating with governments, civil society organisations, and the private sector to develop and implement SDG-aligned projects and programmes, and technical support to African countries to help them track and report their progress on goals.
According to him, “Agenda 2030 is not just a vision, but a concrete roadmap that we must all work towards achieving. As President General of UNAA, I am deeply committed to ensuring that our association is at the forefront of efforts to promote the SDGs and mobilise Africans to take ownership of this agenda.
“Africa has the potential to be a leader in the implementation of the SDGs. With a youthful and dynamic population, a growing middle class, and a rich cultural heritage, we have all the ingredients necessary to achieve rapid socio-economic transformation and sustainable development.
“The SDGs are a collective responsibility that requires the active participation and engagement of all stakeholders. We cannot achieve these goals alone, and therefore, we must work together to mobilise resources, expertise, and influence to drive the SDG agenda forward.”
Okafor, who reiterated his commitment to repositioning the UNAA as a key player in the implementation of the SDGs in Africa, called on all Africans to join forces with the association in this endeavour.
